Anthony went 3-for-4 with three singles in the Red Sox season opener. He also walked once and scored a run. Even though it's just one game, Anthony is starting to warrant some lofty expectations. In fact, MassLive's Sean McAdam predicted that he would win American League MVP this season.

"I am going with Roman Anthony for AL MVP," McAdam said on Thursday. "I've bought the hype, having seen him at the WBC a little bit. I just think he's in for a monster year, and I think the numbers are going to reflect that, and he wins the MVP."

Anthony will have to have a phenomenal season to win MVP, just looking at the rest of the field. Aaron Judge, who has won back-to-back MVP Awards, is the betting favorite. He is followed by Bobby Witt Jr., Cal Raleigh and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Anthony currently has the fifth-best odds, so it's not completely unwarranted to think he can win the award.

The home run numbers for Anthony will be a major key in deciding the award. Judge, Raleigh, Guerrero and Witt are all capable of putting up big home run numbers while also succeeding in other aspects of the game as well.

The last Red Sox player to win MVP was Mookie Betts in 2018. Could Anthony actually claim the award over some future Hall of Famers this year?
