The Philadelphia Phillies finally made the decision everyone was waiting for: they released Nick Castellanos. The $20 million outfielder wasn't going to be on the roster for the 2026 season, and it was only a matter of when, not if, he would be off the team.
But this announcement was also met by one from Castellanos, sharing gratitude for the Phillies fan base, but also revealing what happened during the incident in Miami that set off this eventual release.
On Castellanos' Instagram, he revealed that he brought a beer into the dugout after getting pulled for a defensive substitution in Miami. The story behind the incident is a wild one, and features more than just the beer in the dugout.
Nick Castellanos brought beer into the Phillies dugout
"As a veteran of the game of baseball, there are rules, and I broke one in Miami," Castellanos writes. "After being taken out of a close ball game in front of my friends and family, I brought a presedente into the dugout. I then sat right next to Rob and let him know that too much slack in some areas and too tight of restrictions in others are not conducive to us winning. Shoutout to my teammates and Howie for taking the beer out of my hands before I could take a sip (I appreciate you guys)."
We now know the story behind the wild benching incident with Castellanos from last season in Miami. At the time, it was reported that Castellanos said something to Rob Thomson that was inappropriate, and he was then benched the next day.
But now, with Castellanos' story, it's revealed that while his criticism wasn't warranted, the real issue was that he brought a beer into the dugout.
That's not just an unwritten rule of baseball, but of the working world in general. It's incredibly improper for Castellanos to drink a beer in the dugout after getting benched for a defensive substitution.
While his frustrations were getting the better of him, fortunately, as Castellanos explained, he never took a drink of that beer, as his teammates stopped him from making a bad situation worse.

Castellanos revealed that he went and apologized to Thomson after the game, with Dave Dobmrowksi also in the meeting. He offered to clarify things with the media, but he was requested not to do so.
While the Phillies didn't levy a suspension on Castellanos, his punishment was the one-game benching he got the next day in Miami.
This incident was one of the biggest ones for the Phillies last year, and we know now why things were kept under wraps and why Castellanos was benched.
Castellanos is now a free agent and can sign anywhere this offseason. His tenure in Philadelphia ended a year earlier than it should've, but with how 2025 went, the split was not a question of if, but a question of how and when.
