Fernando Alonso sensing a shift at Aston Martin he hasn’t felt since his Ferrari days
· Yahoo Sports
Fernando Alonso has been chasing his third Formula 1 title for two decades now, and 2026 might just give him the opportunity he’s been waiting for.
His career hasn’t exactly gone to plan since those back-to-back titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006. A mix of questionable team choices, unreliable cars, and sheer bad luck has often kept him from adding another title. He came close with McLaren in 2007 and Ferrari in both 2010 and 2012, but it never quite materialised.

Since returning to the sport in 2021 , Alonso has spent most of his time in the midfield, battling for points and the odd podium. In 2025 Aston Martin surprised many at first with their pace until the grid caught up later that year.
Damon Hill is one who feels that this could be a good thing for Aston Martin, especially with Honda and Adrian Newey at their disposal. The latter is already generating buzz after previewing some of his new design concepts around Miami earlier this year.
Fernando Alonso says he hasn’t felt this optimistic ahead of a season since his Ferrari days
Speaking to Sky Sports at the launch of Aston Martin’s 2026 challenger, the 44-year-old appeared more than ready for what lies ahead. When asked if this was the most optimistic he’s been since leaving Ferrari, he didn’t hesitate. “Yeah, I think so.
“I feel that it’s an important moment in the project of Aston Martin, for sure. We finally have our facilities completed. We have our wind tunnel now designing the car, not a third-party one anymore.
“We have our own gearbox for the first time – that’s a big challenge but in a way it gives you the freedom of designing a key component of the car for the very first time. We have Honda as a partner, so all the pieces now are coming together.
“Our biggest challenge is glueing everything and timing – especially for me. Coming from seventh in the Constructors’ Championship last year, we need to walk before running and we need to make steps one at a time.
“We are competitors, we want to win, we want to fight for big things,” Alonso continued. “And I think that requires a little bit of time – but we want to make this as short as possible.”
What led to Fernando Alonso’s title hopes fading at Ferrari?
Looking back on Alonso’s time at Ferrari, there’s a sense it never quite lived up to expectations. In 2010, he lost out on the title to Sebastian Vettel by just four points, and then fell short again in 2012 by only three.
The 2010 loss drew plenty of criticism from fans, but Ferrari didn’t take it lightly, firing back at critics and backing their driver. Despite another near-miss two years later, Alonso hasn’t driven a car truly capable of fighting for a title since then.
By the time the new regulations arrived in 2014, Alonso could see the writing on the wall. Ferrari’s engine was well off the pace, so he left for McLaren in 2015 – a move that didn’t pan out as he’d hoped.
He spent four seasons battling with underperforming cars before stepping away from F1 between 2018 and 2021. Now with Aston Martin, there’s hope they can finally give him what he needs – but at this stage of his career, time isn’t on his side. Alonso has said he’ll decide on his future beyond 2026 later this year.
