As the player who has participated in the most seasons in NBA history, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is in a unique position. He is already considered by many as one of the greatest players of all time. James is also known for being one of the smartest players in NBA history.
With the mix of experience and knowledge, James has been a fantastic example of a premier basketball player. With this longevity, he has also found out the qualities he wants to see from teammates.
LeBron always wants to play with the smartest players
Over the past two decades, people have gotten accustomed to seeing James. He is not only one of the most impressive athletes ever, but he has also secured a legacy for himself as an unbelievable basketball mind.
His basketball IQ elevates his athleticism to the highest level because he seemingly always makes the right decision. That is difficult to do in such a high-octane sport like basketball. However, James makes it look easy with all the decisions he makes on the court.
On the current Lakers roster, there are plenty of smart players alongside James. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves immediately come to mind as some of the most intelligent players on the current roster due to their decision-making on the court.
James loves that kind of teammate because they know what to do in almost every situation. They don't have to second-guess themselves or make dumb decisions from time to time.
"I admire basketball IQ. I can see it from a mile away if guys have, this is going to sound crazy, but either they have low basketball IQ or high basketball IQ. Yeah, I can spot it from a mile away, so that’s what I admire the most," James said in response to The Guardian's Claire de Lune's question.
It is a valid representation of what LeBron values from his teammates. Through the years, he has played with big basketball brains like Kyrie Irving, Dwyane Wade, and Rajon Rondo. This can also be seen in his current head coach, JJ Redick, who is known for his focus on the X's and O's of basketball.
Moving forward, James will continue to be a fantastic mind for the game, and he would prefer to have similar players who think on the same wavelength as him.
