The Emmy-winning McCormack of Will and Grace fame will host the celebration May 9 at the Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto.

McLachlan and Parets have been added to the roster of Canadian performers taking the stage to perform (or dance to) songs from the British icon’s vast catalogue.

“I am so pleased to have been asked to perform at the 15th Glenn Gould Prize Gala honouring Elton John,” said McLachlan in a statement.

“As a longtime admirer of Elton’s musicianship and philanthropy, it is thrilling to be able to pay tribute to him in this meaningful way. The Glenn Gould Prize is a significant part of Canadian and International arts and culture, and the importance of continuing to honour those who share their gifts with the world cannot be overstated.”

Other performers include jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall, recent double Juno winners The Beaches, singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, tenor and composer Jeremy Dutcher, rising pop/neo-soul artist LOONY, and Ryan Wang, the BBC’s 2024 Young Musician of the Year.

Protege prize going to mezzo-soprano

The evening will also feature a special performance by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo, who was personally selected by John to receive the Glenn Gould Protégé Prize, which recognizes exceptional promise and the importance of mentorship in the arts.

D’Angelo will be presented with the award during the gala.

Often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of the Arts,” the Glenn Gould Prize is awarded biennially to recognize a living individual of any nationality or discipline for a lifetime of artistic achievement that has enriched the human condition.

Established in 1987, the honour includes a $100,000 award for the Laureate, who in turn selects an emerging artist to receive the $25,000 Protégé Prize.

Sir Elton John has sold over 327 million albums worldwide and achieved more than 50 Top 40 hits over five decades. He is a member of the rare EGOT circle, having earned five Grammys, two Academy Awards, an Emmy, and a Tony.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation has also raised more than US$650 million for HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights.
