Griffin was officially promoted to Pittsburgh on Friday and in a corresponding move, former Boston Red Sox infielder Enmanuel Valdez was designated for assignment.
"ROSTER MOVE: The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected the contract of infielder Konnor Griffin from Triple-A Indianapolis," the Pirates' official account posted on Bluesky. "Infielder Enmanuel Valdez was designated for assignment to make room for Griffin on the 40-man roster."
Valdez landed with Boston in an August 2022 trade between the Red Sox and Houston Astros.
The 27-year-old signed with the Astros in July 2015 but never appeared in a game with Houston.
Valdez was sent to Beantown with Gold Glove outfielder Wilyer Abreu in exchange for World Series champion catcher Christian Vazquez and made his MLB debut with the Red Sox on April 19, 2023.
He recorded six home runs and career highs in games played (76), plate appearances (223), RBIs (28) and a host of other categories during the 2024 campaign before being traded to the Pirates in December of that year.
