The teaser of the film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, was recently unveiled, giving audiences a glimpse of Ranbir as Lord Rama. The scale and visual grandeur showcased in the teaser have already generated buzz around the project.

The film is one of the most ambitious productions in Indian cinema, with the two-part epic reportedly mounted on a staggering budget of around Rs 4,000 crore. Despite the huge investment, Malhotra has reportedly decided not to sell the rights cheaply in order to safeguard the film’s long-term value.

A source told Bollywood Hungama, "Namit received an offer of Rs 700 crore for both the films put together, which is the highest ever by a margin for an Indian film. But he took no time to reject the offer. Given the mammoth cost of Rs 4,000 crore, Namit and his team feel that Ramayana deserves more as it's a legacy film that will speak to generations ahead. He is expecting Rs 1,000 crore deal from OTT players, leaving Rs 3,000 crore to be recovered from other sources, including global theatrical."

Holding back rights for the right deal

Instead of immediately monetising the project through satellite, digital and music rights, Malhotra is reportedly holding on to them for now. The producer believes the film’s global appeal could attract a much larger deal once more content from the project is revealed.

The source further explained, "It's a film that gives all platforms a global reach. And Rs 1,000 crore for two films put together is a rather good price given the potential. He is holding the rights close to his chest and will partner with the right player at the right price. There's a possibility for him to sell just part one now, and hold back on part two till the release of part one, a strategy that team Dhurandhar opted for."

The epic adaptation features a strong ensemble cast, with Ranbir portraying Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi playing Sita, Ravie Dubey playing Lakshman and Sunny Deol taking up the role of Lord Hanuman.

The first instalment of Ramayana is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release during Diwali 2026.
