Bengal SIR: Alleged mastermind behind gherao of judicial officers in Malda arrested

A man alleged to be the mastermind behind the gherao of judicial officers in West Bengal’s Malda district was arrested on Friday, The Hindu reported.

Moffakkerul Islam, a lawyer from the Itahar area in Uttar Dinajpur district, was arrested for “instigating people”, ANI reported. Islam had contested the 2021 Assembly elections as a candidate of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen.

North Bengal Inspector General of Police K Jayaraman said that Islam was intercepted at Bagdogra airport while allegedly attempting to flee the state, The Hindu reported. He added that 35 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The West Bengal Police is currently functioning under the Election Commission as the Model Code of Conduct is in force ahead of the Assembly elections.

The incident in Malda took place on Wednesday, when a group of persons protesting against the alleged mass deletion of voters during the revision of electoral rolls held hostage seven judicial officers, including three women, for several hours.

Stones were thrown at their vehicles when the judicial officers were travelling to their residence. They were released from the mob after midnight following the intervention of Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul.
