ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Horseheads baseball cruised to a season-opening win Wednesday on the road.
The Blue Raiders (1-0) topped Binghamton 13-0 in new head coach Andy Scott’s first varsity game as the leader of the program. Scott took over the position after longtime Horseheads baseball coach Jeff Limoncelli retired last season after winning the school’s second-ever New York State Championship. Scott had been an assistant for 17 years under Limoncelli.

Just five days removed from coaching the Horseheads girls basketball team to the New York State Final Four in Class AA, Scott was back coaching on the diamond. But for weeks, Scott was pulling double duty serving as the girls hoops coach and baseball coach as the winter and spring sports seasons crossed over amid playoff time. Scott has served as the girls basketball coach at Horseheads for the past 27 seasons.
Wednesday’s game saw a stellar pitching performance for Horseheads. Cooper Ball and Mason Markle combined for a three hitter on the mound. Ball threw five innings of work with nine strikeouts and gave up just two hits. Markle tossed the final two innings and secured four strikeouts and surrendered only one hit.
Keegan Monahan went 2-for-2 with two RBI and scored three runs for Horseheads. Ball also drove in two RBI and scored two runs while Markle scored twice and drove in an RBI. Six other Horseheads players had at least one hit in the game. The Blue Raiders will next be in action at Vestal (1-0) Friday at 5 pm, weather permitting, in their next contest. The Golden Bears beat Corning 4-1 Wednesday at home.
In other action, Horseheads softball topped Elmira 9-5 in the season opener for both teams. Kolby Chaffee threw a complete game in his first varsity start for the Blue Raiders.
And in boys lacrosse, Corning cruised past Horseheads 14-6 on their home turf. Kohl Hogue scored five goals and had five assists in the Hawks’ big win. Plus, Clayton Smith scored three goals and had an assist to go along with two goals by Joe Fucito. Brogan Sullivan paced Horseheads with two goals and one assist.
