The Minnesota Vikings traded for Carson Wentz before the 2025 NFL season, and he ended up starting five games for the Vikings before a shoulder injury cut his campaign short.

Apparently, the Vikings liked him. They're bringing him back for the 2026 season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday morning that Wentz is signing a one-year free agent contract with the Vikings.

It's a more fascinating acquisition than a season ago, when they didn't have any clear backup for J.J. McCarthy.

Now, the Vikings have already signed Kyler Murray in free agency. On paper, Wentz appears surplus to proceedings.

How Carson Wentz impacts Vikings' QB depth chart

This raises a lot of questions, but it probably doesn't impact Murray.

The former Cardinals star wouldn't have signed with the Vikings if he didn't believe he was going to be the starting QB, and Wentz isn't good enough at this stage of his career to upend Murray.

But as for McCarthy? This is a bit odd.

McCarthy would be set up to back up Murray, and that still is likely true. The third-year QB will probably at least nominally "compete" with Murray in the preseason for the starting job, even if it's Murray's to lose.

But the addition of Wentz opens up other doors. The Vikings could listen on calls for a McCarthy trade, for example, knowing that Wentz would be a fine backup for Murray.

Minnesota could also end up trading Wentz for a small return, if they feel good about the combo of Murray and McCarthy heading into the new year.

This has definitely just made things even more interesting than they already were in the Vikings' QB room.
