The Kansas City Royals added veteran outfielder Starling Marte in March, and new details have now emerged regarding the structure of his contract as he prepares for his first season with the club.

Kansas City officially signed Marte to a one‑year deal after the veteran spent the previous four seasons with the New York Mets. The move gives the Royals a proven hitter with extensive major‑league experience as they attempt to strengthen an outfield group that has struggled in recent years.

Financial details of the contract reveal that while the deal carries a modest guaranteed salary, it also includes numerous performance‑based incentives that could significantly increase Marte’s earnings.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Marte’s contract with the Royals includes a $1 million base salary, plus $125,000 bonuses for reaching 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 450 plate appearances.

He can also earn $150,000 for spending 30 days on the active roster, $200,000 each for reaching 60, 90 and 120 days, and $250,000 for reaching 150 days. The deal also includes award bonuses, paying $100,000 for winning MVP, making the All‑MLB First Team or earning World Series MVP, and $50,000 for a Silver Slugger, ALCS MVP, All‑Star selection or Gold Glove.

For the Royals, the incentive‑heavy structure makes sense given Marte’s recent injury history. The 37‑year‑old battled multiple health issues during his time in New York, including recurring groin injuries that limited his ability to play consistently in the outfield. Because of those injuries, the Mets often used him primarily as a designated hitter during the 2025 season.

Despite the setbacks, Marte remained a productive offensive player. In 2025, he posted a .270 batting average, .335 on‑base percentage and .745 OPS while hitting nine home runs and 34 RBIs.

Kansas City’s interest in Marte also reflects the club’s desire to improve an outfield that has ranked among the least productive units in baseball in recent years. The team added several options during the offseason, including Isaac Collins and Lane Thomas, while defensive specialist Kyle Isbel is expected to remain a key piece in center field.

Given that mix, Marte may ultimately settle into a part‑time role, contributing as a veteran bat while rotating between the designated hitter spot and occasional outfield appearances.
