Protesters who threw bomb at Mamdani’s home reportedly were self-radicalized ISIS extremists

A pair of protesters who allegedly hurled an explosive at the home of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are reportedly self-radicalized ISIS extremists who packed a bomb with “Mother of Satan,” an explosive used by international terrorists.

The protesters — 19-year-old Brahman Kayumi and 18-year-old Emir Balat — were self-radicalized and even travelled to Turkey and other terror-training locations, the New York Post reported.

Balat reportedly spent more than three months in Istanbul last year, while Kayumi trekked to Istanbul and Saudi Arabia in 2024, and to Melbourne, Australia, in 2019.

After their arrest, the pair reportedly admitted to police that they watched ISIS videos and tossed the bomb at anti-Islam protesters on Saturday afternoon because they felt they insulted their religion, the Post reported.

‘Mother of Satan’ bomb

The improvised explosive Kayumi and Balat allegedly tossed was made up of sports drink bottles filled with triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly unstable explosive known as “Mother of Satan” that is favoured by terrorists.

The substance is so volatile that it doesn’t need a fuse to go off, the suspects said.

The dangerous chemical compound can be cheaply made using household ingredients available at home improvement stores and pharmacies.

The same type of bomb was used in terror attacks in France, the UK, Belgium and New Delhi over more than a decade. Often, the bombings are fatal, the Post reported.

The bomb failed to explode during Saturday’s clash between demonstrators led by right-wing activist Jake Lang and pro-Muslim counter-protesters.

The protest took place outside Gracie Mansion, which is Mamdani’s official residence. The confrontation between the two groups quickly turned violent and led to six arrests, including the two alleged would-be bombers.

Cops say a bottle filled with TATP and wrapped in black construction tape was hurled at Lang’s group during one of the violent encounters.

Authorities secured the device in time and ended the threat.

The NYPD and the FBI are now investigating, as search warrants were issued to comb through the Pennsylvania homes of Kayumi and Balat on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, the NYPD Bomb Squad searched a Hyundai vehicle linked to one of the suspects after another tape-wrapped bottle was spotted inside it. The vehicle was later cleared.

During a Monday press conference, New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch said authorities are investigating whether the suspects were inspired by ISIS.

Tisch said police were working with federal prosecutors and the FBI on the case. The FBI said agents with the bureau’s Joint Terrorism Task Force were participating in the investigation.

Mamdani won’t condemn suspects

At the same Monday press conference, Mamdani refused to condemn the alleged bomb-tossing suspects.

“They are suspected of coming here to commit an act of terrorism,” Mamdani said alongside Tisch, per the Post .

“There’s video of these two individuals throwing two devices towards the protest. The police department has determined that these were improvised explosive devices made to injure, maim, or worse.

Let me say this plainly anyone who comes to New York City to bring violence to our streets will be held accountable in accordance with the law,” he added.

Mamdani, NYC’s first Muslim mayor, railed against the anti-Muslim protesters, but didn’t mention that the counter-protesters were allegedly self-radicalized by ISIS videos.
