Despite being knocked out in the semi-finals, the Proteas banked the most in terms of match bonuses at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup.

The Proteas were sent packing from the tournament by New Zealand on Wednesday, 4 March, losing by nine wickets.

While nothing can heal the pain of being knocked out of the tournament, the Proteas did take home several millions in match-day bonuses.

This will go some way in helping ease their pain.

PROTEAS TAKE HOME BIGGEST BONUS YET

New Zealand chased down the Proteas’ total of 169 in just 12.5 overs.

However, the Proteas were able to bank really good money as a result of reaching the semi-finals of the tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

As reported by The South African, losing semi-finalists are guaranteed a massive financial boost of $790 000 (R12.6 million) per team.

MILLIONS MADE IN BONUSES FOR SOUTH AFRICA

In addition, the Proteas earned R3.5 million in bonuses for their seven wins, with the ICC allocating R500 000 per victory for all sides at the T20 World Cup.

South Africa defeated Canada, Afghanistan, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates in the initial group stages.

Thereafter, the Proteas went on to beat India, the West Indies and Zimbabwe in the Super Eights.

They were the only undefeated team in the tournament before they were defeated by New Zealand – the same team they beat convincingly (also by nine wickets) in the group stages.

That’s a grant total of R16.1 million.

MEMORIES MADE, LESSONS LEARNT AT T20 WORLD CUP

The Proteas will have learnt many lessons from this tournament, with a stern reminder of the pressure that accompanies the favourites tag.

After convincingly beating India by 76 runs in front of their home crowd, SA became the new tournament favourites.

Then sweet irony struck as the same side they had beaten convincingly in the group stage sent them packing in the semi-finals.

The Proteas seemed to lose that razor-sharp focus and big-match temperament they had shown for seven matches prior. Perhaps they peaked too soon?

Nonetheless, R12.6 million more was banked and memories were made by Shukri Conrad and his team.

Most dramatic match

The Proteas were involved in arguably the most dramatic T20 match of all time when they faced Afghanistan. The match went to a Super Over and then, with a six off the last ball, another Super Over followed.

Thereafter, they went on to break India’s 12-match winning streak in T20 internationals, doing so in fine style – winning by 76 runs in front of 70 000 fans.

This was one of, if not the best, performances from the Proteas at the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
