The New England Patriots are releasing Stefon Diggs, and they are suddenly in need of a new No. 1 receiver.
The Patriots have continuously been linked to A.J. Brown in trade rumors, and as the new league year approaches, trade talk is heating up. On Thursday, the Buffalo Bills reportedly agreed to trade for D.J. Moore. With their rival adding a new No. 1 receiver, the Patriots are now in the spotlight. NFL insider Ian Rapoport dropped a major update on the Patriots trading for Brown.
"The Bills were one of the teams that were in it for A.J. Brown," Rapoport said in a TikTok on Thursday. "They are now out. This certainly seems like it's going to be the Patriots or the Philadelphia Eagles for A.J. Brown, with an answer likely coming pretty soon."
According to Rapoport, if Brown is getting dealt, it will be to the Patriots. Otherwise, it seems like he will stay put in Philadelphia. There are mixed reports about whether the Eagles want to keep him or not. There are also mixed reports on whether Brown wants to be there. On top of both of those things, it's unclear what type of return it would take for the Eagles to deal him.
Amid all of the uncertainty, one thing seems clear: Brown would love to be a Patriot. He grew up as a Patriots fan and has teased joining the team multiple times. Before last season, he pranked Eagles fans by making them think he got traded to New England. This offseason, he once again teased joining the Patriots on a podcast appearance with Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski.
Not only does he want to be a Patriot, but he already has a relationship with Mike Vrabel. Brown has always praised Vrabel, whom he played for with the Tennessee Titans. Vrabel has talked about how strong their relationship is this offseason as well. Wherever Brown is going to play next season figures to be settled sooner rather than later.
