Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder dies at 23, Deion Sanders announces

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders announced Sunday afternoon that quarterback Dominiq Ponder died at 23.
Ponder was a junior from Opa Locka, Florida, who joined the Buffaloes two seasons ago, transferring from Bethune-Cookman. During his time at CU, Ponder appeared in two games during the 2025 season, recording two rushes and a pass attempt.

Ponder, by all accounts, was a respected teammate and well-liked in the locker room. Sanders echoed that sentiment in his social media message.
"Dom was one of my favorites!" Sanders wrote on X. "he was loved, respected and a born leader. Let's pray for all that knew him and had the opporutnity to be in his presence. Lord you're receiving a good 1."

Tributes poured in across social media for Colorado teammates, highlighting his character, dedication and the genuine connections he built in the locker room.
According to a confirmed USA TODAY Sports report, Colorado State Patrol said that a "23-year-old male died in a single-car accident in Boulder County at about 3 a.m. on March 1 but declined to confirm the person's identity."
Colorado is set to open spring practice Monday in Boulder, with heavy hearts following Sunday's tragic news.
