Big Ten Tournament: Illinois women are seeded 10th and will open vs. 15th-seeded Wisconsin on Wednesday

UCLA, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota received the top four seeds in the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament and will receive automatic bids into the quarterfinals Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

UCLA, ranked second in the country, received the No. 1 seed after going 18-0 in conference play. The Bruins, a senior-led team driven by center Lauren Betts and guard Kiki Rice, lost only to No. 4 Texas on Nov. 26 this season.

Illinois (19-10, 9-9) received the No. 10 seed in the 15-team tournament, missing out on a first-round bye with a loss to Minnesota on Sunday. The Illini open tournament play Wednesday against 15th-seeded Wisconsin. The winner moves on to play No. 7 seed Michigan State on Thursday.

Northwestern, which went 8-21, 2-16 in coach Joe McKeown’s final season before retirement, missed out on making the tournament as one of the bottom three teams in the conference.

The tournament semifinals are at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Big Ten Network, and the championship will be played at 1:15 p.m. Sunday on CBS.
