Steelers meet with Alabama QB Ty Simpson at scouting combine

One of the most polarizing prospects in the 2026 NFL draft is Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Simpson looked like the best quarterback in college football for a stretch in 2025 but his game trailed off late and he created a gap between himself and Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, who is the consensus top overall pick.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are on the hunt for their next franchise quarterback and Simpson is on their radar. When Simpson spoke to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine, he noted that he met with the Steelers, including head coach Mike McCarthy. Simpson said the meeting was very positive.

Simpson threw for 3,567 yards and 28 passing touchdowns last season. He also pitched in 93 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. Simpson has all of the physical tools the Steelers could want in a quarterback and despite limited experience as a starter, plays with excellent poise and a high football IQ.

There’s a real possibility Simpson will be on the board when the Steelers go on the clock with the No. 21 overall pick. However, Simpson is planning to throw at the combine as well as Alabama’s Pro Day and has to be hoping to get some of the momentum back that he lost during the College Football Playoff.
