Steven Kwan Opens Up About Possible Extension Talks with Guardians
· Yahoo Sports
The Cleveland Guardians' top contract extension candidate right now is Steven Kwan. The two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner has two more years of team control left, which is when the organization typically determines what a player’s future will be, whether that involves a trade or a rare contract extension.

Kwan was asked about whether he and the Guardians had any talks about a possible contract extension on Friday, and Cleveland’s outfielder didn’t really have much to say about whether his team and the organization had spoken about one.
I think [conversations] start getting more realistic near the end of spring training. I haven’t heard anything, and it's not my job to go dig in or get hopeful or anything,” Kwan said. “My job is day-to-day, and I'll continue to do that. We'll see what happens later in camp, but as of now, I’m excited for this game [Saturday].”

Mandatory Credit: Denny Medley-Imagn ImagesKwan is correct; if the Guardians do agree to a contract extension with anyone, it typically happens at the end of training camp, a week or so before Opening Day.
That was the case in 2025 with Tanner Bibee, and even looking further back with players who extended with Cleveland, such as Jose Ramirez, Andres Gimenez, Trevor Stephan, Emmanuel Clase, and Myles Straw; all of these players signed their extensions at the end of training camp.
With that in mind, the timing hasn’t really hit yet for when the Guardians normally have these conversations.
The other piece to this, though, is what type of extension Kwan would be looking for. Through his four big-league seasons, Kwan has established himself as one of the game’s top leadoff hitters and best defensive outfielders. He will certainly be looking for a contract that reflects that, but will the Guardians be willing to pay that price?
Right now, for Kwan to focus on the day-to-day and the season at hand, that’s definitely the best mindset. Kwan did have a down 2025 season to his standards, with his .704 OPS being the lowest of his career.
We’ll have to wait and see what happens later in training camp to see if Kwan and the Guardians find some middle ground on an extension. If they don’t, the trade rumors will surely pick back up early on in the regular season.
