Hunter Hess spoke his mind prior to competing at the Winter Olympics about what it's like to represent the United States at this moment in time in the U.S.

President of the United States Donald Trump responded in a social media post on Sunday, calling Hess a "loser."

Hess is a freestyle halfpipe skier.

This is part of what he said in full on Friday, Feb. 6:

"It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now I think. It's a little hard. There's obviously a lot going on that I'm not the biggest fan of and I think a lot of people aren't. I think for me, it's more I'm representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S."

In a later answer, Hess affirmed his thoughts:

"Just 'cuz I'm wearing the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S. I just kind of want to do it for my friends and my family and the people that supported me getting here."

Hess also added: "I just think if it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I'm representing it."

Hess didn't specifically refer to federal immigration actions in the U.S., although other United States athletes have referenced Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in interview answers at the Olympics.

President Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to bash what Hess said.

"U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn’t represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics," Trump wrote. "If that’s the case, he shouldn’t have tried out for the Team, and it’s too bad he’s on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

Hess, from Oregon, has medaled twice in the X Games.

He will compete in the men's freestyle skiing halfpipe competition on Thursday, Feb. 19.
