According to SAWS, the warning will be in effect from midnight on Sunday, 8 February until midnight on Monday, with showers and thunderstorms forecast to develop from the early morning hours over the Overberg and Cape Winelands regions.

Heavy rainfall and flooding

The weather service warned that some storms could become severe, bringing heavy rainfall, flooding and hail.

Rainfall accumulations of between 40mm and 70mm are expected in many areas, while parts of the Overberg could receive more than 100mm of rain.

SAWS noted, however, that uncertainty remains regarding the exact placement and intensity of the heaviest rainfall.

“These severe thunderstorms may lead to flooding of roads and low-lying or vulnerable settlements, as well as dangerous conditions when crossing fast-flowing streams,” SAWS said.

The warning also includes the possibility of small to large hail, which could damage vehicles and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly during intense downpours.

Travel disruptions

SAWS further cautioned that major travel disruptions are possible, with fallen trees potentially blocking key routes.

Agricultural losses are considered likely in affected areas, and disruptions to essential services cannot be ruled out.

Residents in the affected regions are urged to remain vigilant, take necessary safety precautions and stay informed as conditions develop.

SAWS said it will issue further updates as the situation evolves.
